Low resources and difficult contexts ICU and casualty ward


Training project for health workers to emergency departments and intensive care units at low resources or in difficult contexts.

Proponent: Tropicaldoctor team in collaboration with other non-profit associations/ NGO’s of the sector.

In order to ensure, in addition to essential drugs and surgery, also those indispensable intensive treatments and resuscitations we should think to intensive procedures at low cost, at the same time valid and effective although reproduced with alternative techniques.

The training program is aimed at health care professionals critical care, emergency and intensive anesthetists-resuscitators, anesthesia technicians, intensivists, emergency doctrors and concerns adaptation of certain procedures and specific intensive treatments extremely useful to reduce time and costs of stay for critically ill patients admitted in emergency departments and intensive care units taking into account the context, the resources and infrastructure available in the beneficiary hospital and especially of the project’s sustainability.

The project aims to:

  1. review the proper implementation of international protocols and guide lines based on available resources, ranging from antibiotics to enteral nutrition;

  1. review the procedures in first aid level both as regards the triage that the CPR and the anti-shock room making any improvements;

  1. train medical and paramedical staff on emergency using courses adapted to the context and to the territory under international literature such as BLS, BLS-D, ATLS, PTC …

  1. start early defibrillation program by starting with the highest density of population centers with appropriate training for the use of semi-automatic defibrillators AED;

  1. spread the use of non-invasive methods such as ventilation CPAP / NIV in acute or chronic respiratory failure, postoperative patients and cardiopulmonary diseases such as specific situations like pulmonary edema;

  1. train on specific procedures such as minimally invasive tracheotomy with modified Griggs method that reduces the kit costs and complications of surgical tracheotomy;

  1. review and evenctually improve burnt unit protocols and treatments;

  1. others.
